Every Sudong generator set we supply is available in two forms: open, on a base frame with radiators and controls exposed, or silent, packaged inside a sound-attenuating enclosure. The hardware inside is the same Yuchai engine, matched alternator and controller. What changes is everything around them.
01What the enclosure actually does
A silent canopy is four jobs in one box:
- Noise control — attenuation through lined panels, engineered air paths and anti-vibration mounting
- Weather protection — a roof and walls between the set and rain, sun and salt air
- Security and safety — hot surfaces and live terminals behind locked doors
- Housekeeping — a defined footprint, cable entry and a presentable package next to occupied spaces
None of those jobs is free. The enclosure adds cost, adds footprint, and — most importantly — puts walls around the set's own cooling air. That last part is the one that causes real failures.
02The noise numbers
An open industrial set is loud — conversation-stopping, hearing-protection loud at close range. A well-built silent enclosure typically brings the set down to levels that read as background noise from a few meters away, especially with the attenuation of distance in between.
Two rules make the numbers usable:
- Perceived loudness roughly halves with every 10 dB(A) drop. Attenuation that looks modest on paper is dramatic to the ear.
- Noise limits are usually set at a boundary, not at the set. A silent set 10 meters from the property line behaves very differently from an open set at the same distance.
If someone can hear the standby set from the nurses' station, it is not a power problem — it is an enclosure decision made too late.
03When an open set wins
- Dedicated plant rooms. The room already provides weather protection and noise isolation; a canopy duplicates both and makes the space harder to work in.
- Containerized and skid installations. The container is the enclosure; the set inside should be open.
- Tight maintenance budgets. Every filter, belt and fluid checkpoint on an open set is one motion away. The same job on a canopy means doors, panels and sometimes contortion.
- Maximum airflow. Open sets breathe freely, which matters at high ambient temperatures and high ratings — see how to size a generator set for the derating side of that equation.
04When a silent set wins
- Hospitals and clinics. Standby sets near wards and consult rooms need to be quiet, and they need to run all night during outages. The silent sets we supplied to Northern Palawan Provincial Hospital and Palawan Southern Hospital — 500 kVA with automatic transfer switches — are the standard answer to that duty.
- Schools, offices and hotels. Anywhere the set sits within earshot of people trying to work or sleep.
- Outdoor and rooftop sites. No plant room, no shelter, and a rainy season to survive — the canopy is the building.
- Coastal and island installations. Salt air and direct sun age an open set's wiring, radiators and controls quickly; an enclosure buys real service life.
05Trade-offs to plan for
If you go silent, plan around the four costs of the box:
- Ventilation. The canopy restricts cooling and combustion air. The set must be rated for operation inside its own enclosure at your site's ambient temperature — not just at the reference condition on the datasheet.
- Footprint and access. A silent set is larger than the open equivalent, and it needs clearance for doors to open fully. Service access is designed in or absent — check it before you buy.
- Heat soak. After shutdown, the enclosure holds heat. Repeated starts in quick succession need to account for it.
- Housekeeping. Louvers and screens clog with dust and salt. They are on the maintenance schedule or they quietly derate the set.
How we handle it
When you send us the site details, we confirm the enclosure type together with the rating — the two decisions are linked. Open for the plant room you already have; silent for everything the site exposes to people, weather or salt.
Tell us where the set will stand and who will be standing near it — request a quote and we will specify the package accordingly.
